Selective female infanticide, sex-selective abortion, child marriage and the denial of access to maternal healthcare, family planning services or contraception must be ended as contributors to unstable and unsustainable populations.
States have an obligation to their citizens to enact future-proof policies which allow the challenges of a growing world population to be transformed into opportunities. Ensuring a sustainable global population tomorrow requires empowering the women and children of today.
Population policies impact on nearly all aspects of human life and development. To meet 2050’s expected world population, food production would have to increase by 70%. Carbon dioxide levels will double, causing global temperatures to rise by 2.5°C as a result. Yet in 2012 there were 222 million women with an unmet need for contraception. Annually 74 million women worldwide become unintentionally pregnant, with up to a third of all pregnancies estimated as unwanted.
Policies which guarantee that women have full access to health and family planning services and birth control can help ensure a sustainable and healthy population.
Implementing sustainable solutions to help ensure every child born is wanted contributes to the progression of our interconnected global movements.
